Women's Hoops Clinches Win Over MATC

Milwaukee, Wis., Dec. 18, 2021 - The Elgin Community College women's basketball team clinched a 65-61 victory over Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 3-7 as the Stormers dip to 7-8.

ECC limited MATC's shooting to 30.3 percent throughout the game to grab the win.

Jessie Dumoulin tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as Trinity Reyes scored a season-best 25 points, including four three-pointers, and a team-high four assists off of the bench.

The first quarter was tied at 7-7 with 4:16 remaining, before the Stormers found a six-point swing for the 13-7 lead with one minute to go. Three pointers from Ariana Marchan and Reyes tightened the deficit to 15-13 to enter the next quarter.

The Spartans held the Stormers scoreless through eight points with two threes from Reyes and a jump shot from Dumoulin for a 25-17 lead with five and a half minutes until halftime. The women kept the edge to enter the next half at 31-25.

MATC found its most dominant quarter in the third with 20 points. They tightened up the score to 45-45 entering the final 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter remained back and fourth as neither team was able to gain more than a three-point edge over the other until the final two minutes.

Marchan hit a jumper to give the Spartans a 62-59 edge with 2:10 left to play. Takara Campbell made a jump shot with 25 seconds left on the board followed by a made free throw from Reyes. The Stormers put up two more points but Elgin was able to come away with the 65-61 win.

The Spartans face Kishwaukee on Tuesday for the final game of the calendar year.
