Baseball Wins First Two of the Season

Davenport, Fla. - The Elgin Community College clinched a 28-5 win over Holyoke and a 6-2 victory over Mount Saint Joseph on Thursday night.

The Spartans improve to 2-4 in their season.

Game 1: Elgin 28, Holyoke 5

The high-scoring affair brought career days to many of the players as Gavin Crofoot and Erik Teran II hit their first home runs of the season.

Crofoot led the team with five RBIs as Jack Keck tallied four and Teran and Max Hertel registered three apiece. Andrew Flynn recorded a team-high five runs with Keck, Crofoot, Teran and Luke Bolender scoring three. Crofoot and Keck also led the team with three hits.

Drew Piaskowy earned his first win on the mound in four innings with eight strikeouts.

Elgin brought in seven runs in the first inning and one in the second for an 8-1 advantage. The team followed up with a program record 14 runs in the third inning to run away with the game for the 28-5 victory in seven innings.

Game 2: Elgin 6, MSJU 2

Frank Szymanski made his first start of the season as he clinched his first win in five innings with nine strikeouts.

Crofoot recorded two runs on one hit with one RBI as Teran and Eli Johnson tallied one run on one hit. Ty Sierpien, Scott Emma, Aiden Kashuba and Ryan Nelson registered one RBI apiece.

ECC scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third and fifth and two in the sixth to total their six runs. MSJU scored two in the top of the seventh for the 6-2 final score.

The Spartans face Rockland in a doubleheader on Friday starting at 9 a.m. CST.
