Sugar Grove, Ill., Sept. 17-19, 2021 - The Elgin Community College started the six-match Region IV Crossover Tournament at Waubonsee with its first win of the season.

The Spartans move to 1-14 on the season.

Elgin's victory came from a 3-1 win over Illinois Valley. The women recorded a dominant first set, outscoring the Eagles 25-10.

Illinois Valley tightened up its game in the second, with Elgin able to edge them out 25-23 to take the set. 

The Eagles continued to find its rhythm as they pushed the game to an additional set as they won the third 25-16.

ECC wrapped up the contest in the fourth, edging the Eagles by two points yet again at 25-23.

Cassie Pitte tallied a team-high eight kills with Kaila Kammes close behind at seven. Setter Cece Gonzales registered 22 assists throughout the match.

The Spartans faced Carl Sandburg, Highland (Ill.), Sauk Valley, Black Hawk and Lake County, but fell 3-0 to all five teams.

Elgin hosts Prairie State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
