No. 17 Men's Soccer Splits in Opening Week

Elgin, Ill. - The No. 17 men's soccer team split a pair of games in their opening week of play.

The Spartans move to 1-1 in the overall season.

August 21: Mineral Area 6, Elgin 3

Kevin Aguilar scored the first goal of the game in the 29th minute before Mineral Area countered with two goals of their own to lead 2-1 at halftime.

Atlai Gutierrez tied it up in the 57th minute with an assist from Christian Escobedo. Aguilar netted a second goal just 10 minutes later to lead 3-2 with 22 minutes remaining.

The Cardinals favored long balls from their defense to find four goals in 17 minutes to hand Elgin the 6-3 loss.

August 23: South Suburban 4, Elgin 5

Aguilar netted a goal with an assist from Gutierrez in the first minute of play. Escobedo scored in the second minute with another assist from Gutierrez to take a very early lead. Nick Prus found the back of the goal 33rd minute as South Suburban countered with their own goal a minute and a half later to enter halftime with a 3-1 advantage.

The Bulldogs tied up the game after early goals in the first five minutes of the second half.

Escobedo scored his second goal of the game in the 55th to take the lead back before Reyli Perez scored on an assist from Escobedo in the 78th minute. South Suburban tightened the score up with their own goal in the 88th minute, but ECC held on for their first win of the season.

 

The Spartans open conference play at No. 14 Morton on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
