Spartans Outlasted by No. 18 Madison

Elgin, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team suffered a 13-10 loss to No. 18 Madison on Tuesday afternoon.

The Spartans move to 5-9 in their overall season.

Lucas Aguirre made the start and recorded nine strikeouts in five innings. Daniel Kinney appeared in the top of the ninth and struck out all three batters faced.

Andrew Flynn and Charlie Jury went 3-for-4 and combined for three RBI. Patrick Nelson hit his second home run of the season.

ECC took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Chris Lara and Nick Weaver got on base, advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Flynn and scored on Jack Kerno's single to center field. Patrick Nelson walked and Jury followed with a one-run double. Josh Collins grounded out, allowing Nelson to score.

Both teams scored one run in the second inning as the Spartans held a 5-1 advantage.

The Wolfpack scored two in the third before Elgin countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jury and Collins walked and Ryan Caccia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Lara earned an RBI walk and a pair of singles from Weaver and Flynn made it a 9-3 game.

Patrick Nelson his his home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Madison scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for their fourth run. They went on to score seven in the seventh and two in the eighth to hand ECC the loss.

The Spartans are back on the road to face Triton on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
