Elgin, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team split a pair of games with Prairie State on Monday afternoon.
The Spartans move to 7-10 overall and 1-1 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play as the Pioneers move to 6-17 and 1-1.
Game 1: Prairie State 2, Elgin 4
Adrian Ruiz recorded his second win of the season with four strikeouts and no runs allowed. Patrick Nelson recorded two RBI as Luke Bolender and Gavin Crofoot each tallied one. Erik Teran II, Logan Riley, Nelson and Aiden Kashuba scored one run apiece.
Prairie State scored runs in the third and fourth innings for their sole runs of the game.
Elgin countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Singles from Riley and Teran put them on base and both scored on Nelson's RBI single to tie up the game. A few plays later, Bolender's double sent Nelson home and Crofoot hit it into an RBI single for the 4-2 advantage.
The rest of the game would go scoreless as Elgin clinched its first conference win of the season.
Game 2: Prairie State 5, Elgin 3
Teran, Nelson and Ryan Nelson registered the three RBI as Josh Collins, Crofoot and P. Nelson scored the runs.
Crofoot and Riley singled to start the game with Crofoot advancing to third on a bunt from Teran. R. Nelson hit an RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead.
Prairie State tied it up 2-2 in the third and extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh.
ECC scored one in the bottom of the inning, but could not make up the deficit for a 5-3 final score.
The Spartans travel to face Kankakee on Thursday at 3 p.m.
