Baseball Splits at Lake County

Grayslake, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team fell 16-6 in game one and won 7-6 in game two at the College of Lake County on Tuesday.

The Spartans move to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play as the Lancers move to 15-13 and 3-5.

Game 1: Lake County 16, Elgin 6

Nik Panico scored two runs on two hits with Nick Schumann also bringing in two RBI.

Scott Emma got the third inning rolling with a single and advanced to second on Lorenzo Ranallo's sacrifice bunt. Emma moved to third off of Luis Rodriguez's single and scored on Panico's double to center field. Nick Schumann hit a sacrifice fly to send Rodriguez home. Panico scored the third on an error to make it a 3-0 game.

Lake County countered with seven runs, but Panico was able to strikeout the final two batters to end the inning.

Two errors put runners on second and third in the top of the fourth. Rodriguez, Panico and Schumann earned RBIs to tighten the score up to 7-6.

The Lancers offense continued to do well at the plate, scoring runs in the next three innings to end the game in the sixth with a 16-6 loss.

Game 2: Lake County 6, Elgin 7

Justin "JZ" Zimmerman earned the win from the mound in six innings with six strikeouts. Adrian Ruiz came in as relief in the final inning to earn the save.

Schumann recorded a team-high three runs on three hits and Derek Angelo registered three RBI as the cleanup hitter.

Angelo grounded into a fielder's choice to score the first run of the game.

Schumann singled, Angelo doubled and Erik Teran hit an RBI single to send Schumann home in the top of the third inning.

Lake County took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.

Elgin quickly countered with a double from Schumann, an RBI from Angelo and one-run doubles from Teran and Johnson for the 5-4 advantage.

Angelo hit a two-run double to center field to put up the sixth and seventh runs.

CLC scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but ECC held them off for the 7-6 victory.

The Spartans host Kankakee for a single game on Thursday at 3 p.m.
