River Grove, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team clinched its fifth win of the season with an 18-8 victory over Triton College on Sunday.
The Spartans move to 5-2 as the Trojans dip to 4-8 on the season.
Nik Panico got the game rolling with a double followed by a single from Nick Schumann. Logan Riley grounded out, but Panico was able to score on the play.
Alijah Acevedo earned a walk and advanced to third on Luis Rodriguez's single. Panico homered to left field to drive in three runs. Schumann singled, stole second and scored off of Riley's fly ball and an error for the 5-0 lead after two innings.
Acevedo walked again and advanced to third off of Mauricio Grosso's double to left field. Both scored when Rodriguez doubled to right.
Triton scored six runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the fourth to tie it up at 7-7.
Elgin popped off in the fifth inning as they scored 10 runs. Rodriguez and Panico hit back-to-back singles and Rodriguez advanced to third on Schumann's fly out to lead off the inning. Riley grounded it into a fielder's choice to advance Rodriguez home.
Derek Angelo loaded up the bases with a single to right field. Panico scored on Erik Teran's fielder's choice as everyone else advanced one base. Riley scored on an error.
Acevedo hit a two-run double as Grosso followed with a two-run homer to center field. Schumann hit a three-run homerun to left field to make it a 17-7 game.
The Trojans tacked on a run in the fifth and Elgin closed out the game in the eighth with a double from Riley and single from Teran for the 18-8 win.
The Spartans are back on the road to face Joliet Junior College on March 29 at 2 p.m.
