St. Charles, Mo. - The Elgin Community College baseball team split a pair of games with St. Charles Community College on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: St. Charles 15, Elgin 7
Derek Angelo, Alijah Acevedo, Logan Riley and Nick Schumann each collected one hit to lead the Spartans.
Nik Panico started out the first inning by being hit by a pitch to earn a base. His tenacity paid off as Schumann followed up with a home run for the team to take an early 2-0 lead.
Acevedo led off the second with a walk and eventually scored after three teammates were hit by a pitch.
St. Charles put its first run on the board after a double and two errors in the bottom of the inning.
Angelo singled and reached second on an error to put himself in scoring position. Erik Teran walked and Acevedo homered to right field to drive in three runs.
Mauricio Grosso was hit by a pitch and Eli Johnson walked as each was able to steal to put themselves on second and third. Panico's ground out allowed Grosso to score to make it a 7-1 game entering the bottom of the third inning.
SCCC rallied its offense to score three runs in the third and fourth innings to tie it up at 7-7.
Five singles, a sacrifice bunt and one error tacked on five runs for the Cougars in the fifth followed by an additional three in the sixth to hand the Spartans the 15-7 loss.
Game 2: Elgin 6, St. Charles 2
Frank Szymanski earned the win from the mound with three innings and four strikeouts. Acevedo led the offense with two hits in four at bats.
Elgin put the first run on the board in the second inning when Teran earned a walk and advanced to third off of a wild pitch. Acevedo hit the RBI single to left field.
St. Charles tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after a batter singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and crossed home plate on an error.
ECC's big fifth inning started with the bases loaded after two walks and a hit by pitch. Lorenzo Ranallo scored on Riley's ground ball. During Angelo's at bat, Panico scored on a wild pitch as runners moved to second and third on the same pitch.
Angelo's walk loaded up the bases once again with no outs. Teran hit a three-run double to left field to make it a 6-1 game.
SCCC tallied one more run in the sixth off a wild pitch as Elgin wrapped up its weekend with a 6-2 win.
The Spartans are back on the road to face Sauk Valley on March 17.
