Baseball Splits Opening Day

St. Charles, Mo. - The Elgin Community College baseball team finished its first day of the season with a 15-14 win over Dawson Community College and an 11-1 loss to St. Charles on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Elgin 15, Dawson 14

Adrian Ruiz made the start on the mound and struckout seven batters. Derek Angelo earned the victory with Brett Huiner and Isaac Kopalchick providing relief.

Mauricio Grosso was 2-2 at the plate with a three-run homer and the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win. Erik Teran was 3-4 with a double in the first inning.

ECC put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Alijah Acevedo was hit by a pitch, putting him on first, and Teran put both of them in scoring position with a double to left field. Eli Johnson loaded the bases with a single to third. With Luis Rodriguez at bat, Acevedo scored on a passed ball and Acevedo's ground-out brought in Teran.

Dawson hit home runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game up at 2-2.

Elgin took back the lead in the fourth with a single from Teran. Rodriguez managed to get on base thanks to a fielding error that advanved Teran to third. Nik Panico drove in two runs with a double to center to take back the lead at 4-2.

DCC found its first advantage of the game with three runs in the fifth to take the 5-4 edge.

The Spartans also brought in three runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead at 7-5. Grosso and Acevedo earned a walk and each advanced one base from Teran's single to right field. Johnson hit it into a fielder's choice to third, driving Johnson, Grosso and Teran in for three RBI.

Dawson tightened the game to 7-6 with a run in the sixth inning.

ECC had a huge sixth, scoring five runs. Rodriguez hit a single and advanced to second from Panico's at bat. Nick Schumann got on first after being hit by a pitch and Grosso brought them in with a three-run homer to left field. Angelo hit it into a double with Acevedo following it up with another home run for a 12-6 advantage entering the final inning of play.

DCC fought back to score eight runs, including two doubles and a gram slam, to take the lead at 14-12 entering the bottom of the inning.

Elgin loaded up the bases on no outs after Lorenzo Ranallo earned a walk, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Scott Emma singled to right field. Nick Schumann drove in the tying runs with a hard ground ball to left.

Grosso hit the walk-off single as he drove it into left as Emma scored on the throw for the 15-14 victory.

Game 2: Elgin 1, St. Charles 11

Angelo, Emma, Grosso, Panico, Rodriguez and Schumann registered one hit in the game.

St. Charles scored a home run in the second inning to put the first run on the board.

Rodriguez singled in the third and scored from Grosso's triple to make it a 1-1 game.

The Cougars pulled away in the fourth inning with three runs as Elgin was unable to contain the opposing team as it suffered an 11-1 loss.

The Spartans face St. Charles for a doubleheader on Sunday with the first game beginning at 11 a.m.
